Regional Nordic Skiing Venues
Kooser State Park (Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania) offers 3 miles of easy trails meandering along a scenic creek and is popular among novice skiers. Most trails are groomed (with tracks set) for classic skiing when conditions permit. No trail fee. Summer camping and year-round cabin rentals are also available. The park is patrolled most weekends by the Laurel Highlands Nordic Ski Patrol. Info & Map
Forbes State Forest (Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania) offers dozens of miles of scenic trails ranging from easy to difficult. A few of the easier trails in the Laurel Summit area are near Laurel Mountain Ski resort, 10 miles East on Route 30 from Ligonier. Follow Laurel Summit road past the ski resort entrance to the warming hut for parking, info and maps. Trails are sometimes groomed with tracks set for classic skiing. They are patrolled on most weekends by the Laurel Summit Nordic Ski Patrol.
Trails in the North Woods area are located near Hidden Valley Ski resort, 10 miles East of Donegal on PA Route 31. For trail access, follow Tunnel road to the top of the hill. Trails may be compacted (no tracks set) for classic skiing as conditions permit. The North Woods area, along with the ungroomed trails of the Roaring Run and Jones Mill Run areas, are patrolled on most weekends by the Laurel Highlands Nordic Ski Patrol. Assess to these areas may be found off Gardner or Fire Tower roads. There are no trail fees for Forbes state forest trails. Info & Map
Laurel Ridge State Park (Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania) offers 20 miles of trails at the cross country skiing concession, accessed via PA Route 653 near Normalville, PA. Many trails are groomed for classic and skate skiing. A trail fee is charged in this area of the park. Refreshments and rentals are available. Info & Map
Blue Knob All Seasons Resort (Claysburg, PA) offers a wide variety of groomed and ungroomed trails, rentals, lessons, restaurants, and lodging. A trail fee is charged. Info & conditions
White Grass (Canaan Valley, WV) offers many miles of magnificent trails, equipment sales and rentals, lessons, and a natural foods cafe. A trail fee is charged. Info & conditions
Oil Creek State Park (Venango County, PA) offers over 11 miles of trails groomed for classic skiing, a warming hut, restrooms, and camping in Adirondack shelters. A trail fee is charged. No dogs. Info & conditions
Wilderness Lodge (Wattsburg, PA) above the Erie snow line, offers numerous groomed trails for all levels of classic and skate skiing. There is a trail fee. Maps Conditions
